POSTPARTUM INFORMATION - DISCOMFORT IN THE PERINEAL AREA

This discomfort can be from vaginal delivery or lengthy labour before caesarean section, and can usually take up to ten days for the pain to subside.

To relieve the discomfort in the meantime, make yourself as comfortable as possible. Try sitting on a pillow or cushion, and use an ice pack wrapped in a flannel or hospital maternity pad to reduce any perineum swelling, be sure not to have direct contact to the ice pack.

The midwife or nurse may monitor your perineum daily to ensure that no infections arise.
