POSTPARTUM INFORMATION - EMOTIONS/BABY 'BLUES'

Up to 80% of mothers will find that they become more sensitive during the first two weeks postpartum, this is normal and is usually known as the baby ‘blues’.

It is not unusual to cry inconsolably sometime within the first two weeks postpartum for ‘no apparent reason’, these postpartum emotions occurs from the hormonal changes in a woman after childbirth.

Even though it is undoubtedly the most joyous time in your life, you may be feeling mixed emotions by feeling ‘blue’ one moment, only to be laughing the next moment. Motherhood can be overwhelming and wanting to provide the safest and most secure environment for your baby is natural. Sometimes a mother can doubt her ability to be able to provide this environment to her newborn in the early weeks, but such feelings will pass quite quickly, and motherhood will be like second nature. Just reassure yourself and acknowledge the work you have done so far.

It must be noted that the baby ‘blues’ is different from postnatal depression. Anyone suffering from postnatal depression should consult their healthcare professional to seek appropriate treatment.
