BABIES WITH REFLUX

Infant reflux is where the muscle at the top of the baby’s stomach does not work effectively and that muscle is not able to stop the contents from the stomach going back up and spilling out of a baby’s mouth.

Babies with reflux may sometimes experience pain and discomfort with it, whilst other babies with reflux may be vomiting or posseting without experiencing the pain and discomfort, generally seeming to be a happy baby.

Symptoms of infant reflux may include:

• Refusal to feed
• Crying during and after feeding, especially when lying down (ie. When changing nappy or sleep time)
• Vomiting or posseting
• Crying, irritability and/or screaming
• Disrupted sleep behaviour
• Congestion
• Poor weight gain

Silent reflux is the term used where the baby has reflux but without any vomiting or posseting, this is where the food in your baby’s stomach only makes it part of the way up the oesophagus.

Treatment of infant reflux may include:

• Elevating the head section of your baby’s mattress
• Keeping your baby upright during a feed
• Keeping your baby upright for 20 minutes after a feed
• Using a thickener to thicken up baby’s milk can sometimes reduce vomiting or posseting
• Medicines (prescribed by doctor, or over the counter natural medicines)

Once your baby is able to sit upright unassisted, you may find that the symptoms of reflux may reduce.
